What's Actually in LeanBiome
LeanBiome's formula centers on nine probiotic strains plus three supporting ingredients. Below, each ingredient with meaningful independent evidence gets its own section — including exactly what the underlying study measured, so you can judge the evidence yourself.
The Probiotic Strains
Lactobacillus gasseri, L. rhamnosus, L. fermentum, L. plantarum, L. paracasei, Bifidobacterium bifidum, B. lactis, B. longum, and B. breve — nine strains generally recognized as safe and commonly used across the probiotic supplement category. Below are the four with the most relevant published human research.
Lactobacillus gasseri (SBT2055)
A 2013 randomized controlled trial in the British Journal of Nutrition (Kadooka et al., N=210) gave adults fermented milk containing L. gasseri SBT2055 for 12 weeks. The supplemented group saw an 8.5% reduction in abdominal (visceral) fat area, along with significant reductions in BMI, waist/hip circumference, and body fat mass — effects that diminished after supplementation stopped.
Worth knowing: this trial delivered the bacteria via fermented milk at a specific dose, not as an encapsulated blend alongside eight other strains. Real, solid evidence for this specific strain — not evidence for LeanBiome's capsule as a whole.
Lactobacillus rhamnosus
Research from Université Laval found greater weight loss in overweight/obese women taking L. rhamnosus versus placebo over 12 weeks, with the difference continuing to widen during a follow-up maintenance phase. Same caveat applies: single-strain, isolated result.
Greenselect Phytosome® (green tea extract)
A 2009 trial in Alternative Medicine Review (Di Pierro et al., N=100) put all participants on a calorie-restricted diet, with half also taking 300mg/day of Greenselect Phytosome. After 90 days, the supplemented group had significantly greater weight loss and BMI reduction than the diet-only group.
Worth knowing: both groups dieted. This is evidence for green tea extract as a diet adjunct, not evidence it drives weight loss on its own. The often-cited "30 lb difference" figure traces to the ingredient manufacturer's own marketing summary of this trial — we're flagging the source rather than presenting it as an independently confirmed number.
Lactobacillus fermentum
Smaller research (including a University of Manitoba-linked study) has looked at L. fermentum and body adiposity, with modest reported effects — supportive, lower-tier evidence relative to the two ingredients above.
Supporting Ingredients
Inulin — a prebiotic fiber that feeds beneficial gut bacteria; well-established as a prebiotic, not itself a weight-loss agent.
Weaker evidenceSphaeranthus indicus + Garcinia mangostana — a botanical pair with some published trials (often under other branded names) showing modest effects on fat-storage markers. Evidence here is weaker and more industry-funded than the strains above — treat claims about this pair with more caution.
Allergen & Dietary Info
Per the manufacturer, the formula is vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, and non-GMO. (Seller claim — verify against the current label if you have specific allergy concerns.)
What This Adds Up To
Individually, several of these ingredients have decent evidence. Whether they combine to replicate those individual effects in one capsule hasn't been tested. See Does LeanBiome Work? for the full picture.
